Alert: Vodafone Hutchison Australia: Your Account Balance

Today I received multiple emails across a number of email accounts with the subject: “Vodafone Hutchison Australia:  Your Account Balance”. The emails contained a zip file attachment (Vodafone_Account_BalanceID4627596.zip, the number varies) which is malware. You should delete these emails immediately.

    I work in IT and received that same email today and immediately thought it looked dodgy. I am however a Vodafone customer and thought I would check. So I rang Vodafone and they assured me that it was legitimate. I still haven’t opened it because my experience tells me not to. Interested to know if you have any more info.

      I received four emails to four different email accounts I have. I don't have a Vodafone service and stopped using prepaid Vodafone a few months ago.

      In addition I saved the attached zip file to my Desktop and scanned it. The anti-virus software reported a positive for malware, which was subsequently removed.

      It is always possible you have received a legitimate email from Vodafone for your account. Do you receive these emails each month? Keep in mind scammers/malware writers will take a legitimate email and modify it, attach their malware or change the links to a malware infected site, or use other malicious techniques. So be very careful.

      If in doubt you could have your email checked. Alternately, I suspect you can access your account online via the Vodafone site to logon and download your account statement direct from the site. That way you can be sure of the information you receive. Unless you sent the email to Vodafone and their technical support (not just their call centre support people) checked it for you, I'd be careful with their advice. I've received bad/flawed advice from most telcos including Vodafone. I regularly fix things for clients the telcos have screwed up. You can't blame them as staff have to deal with a large volume of issues, with a short amount of time, in what can be a complex area.

      Thanks for your reply. No I don't generally receive those sorts of emails but my address is listed with Vodafone which is why I second guessed myself. From what you say I'm fairly confident that the email is bogus and won't be opening it.
      Appreciate your advice.

  2. I received an e-mail with the same subject earlier today, however I live in North America and I am not a Vodafone client.

  3. I received one on Monday 18/8. I'm in IT as well and as I don't have a vodafone account and it was a ZIP file the warning bells went off. I just deleted it.
